    FAQs

It depends. A 48 port switch can be suitable for certain roles within a data center, such as ToR or edge aggregation. They’re not typically used as core switches in large-scale data centers, which demand higher throughput, spine-leaf architecture, or modular chassis-based switches.

However, for smaller data centers, remote locations, or specific zones like storage or access layers, 48 port switches — especially with SFP+ or PoE capabilities — can be an efficient, scalable solution.

You cannot exceed the total PoE budget. Once the PoE budget is reached, the switch will stop supplying power to additional PoE devices. It prioritizes existing active ports and may deny power to new ones rather than shutting down active connections. Some managed switches let you set port priority levels so that critical devices always stay powered. This safeguards the switch from overload and ensures stable operation.

Select models in our M4500 and M4350 range do offer redundant or modular power supply support. However, most standard NETGEAR 48 port switches do not feature hot-swappable or interchangeable power supplies. Features like hot-swappability are typically found in rackmount, high-capacity switches rather than compact or unmanaged ones. Always check the specific model's datasheet or hardware specs to confirm.
